A test was in progress in regards to oil consumption
problems reported most likely in the "Flight Snag" book. It was not unusal for others beside the aircrew and
ground crew to be on board. A ride in one of the bombers was something many would never normally have the chance
to take part in. WAAFs and others who served on the base would be "passengers" for a test flight.
This was not the only Wellington that was attached to 419 Squadron to crash during tests and kill passengers and crew, X3556 was the other.
Sometime within the two hour testing the aircraft went into a 45 degree dive from which it would not come out of.
The Aircraft came down near Thursby 9 miles East of Stamford, Lincolnshire.
In addition to the crew there were two mechanics, Fitter IIA LAC Jahnke and Fitter II E Sgt. Wilson plus two ground crew Riggers LAC Lawley and Luten who were on leave from the Maintenance group.
No cause for the accident is given in the Report. They also had problems locating the pilot's log to find any information on his hours logged.
