Crew of Wellington X3556

The Wellington had the starboard engine fail. The pilot then attempted a wheels up forced landing.
The field chosen was plowed and the Wellingtons landing attitude caused the aircraft to overturn, killing eight of the people on board. There is also a report that the Wellington hit a fence, which caused it to turn over and catch fire Two men survived the crash one is mentioned as injured while no mention of injuries is seen on the second survivor. The crash occurred just one mile west of Catsworth, Huntingdonshire England.

F/S Pearson and some airman killed in this crash listed below flew X3556 on operations two days prior.
Although listed as a training flight it may have been a "Air test" of the Wellington after repairs.
All the extra men on board seem to indicate this as an test more then a training flight since the mechanics were on board.
In a letter from the families of one of the WAAFs sent to this website, they remember her telling of a "ride" she gave up to some others, and the aircraft crashed and many were killed. She may have been talking about this incident. Quite often "rides" were given to ground crew or WAAF personnel.
