Although this appears to be a great photo with lots of detail and clear view of a Lancaster and the bombs damage going on below it.
The truth is that the if the Lancaster had strayed into that position a few seconds or so earlier, the crew would hae not made
it home.
The photo was taken automatically as the aircraft above dropped its bomb load,it then stays on for a short time afterwards.
The Lancaster below would have been hit by the bombs being dropped from above.
Althiugh I do not know if either of these aircraft were 419 Squadron Lancasters. It did happen though to two Moose Pilots.
Neither one of them
knew about it until they were shown the photo later that day.
I had been in contact with one of the Pilot's
families and they mentioned how even many decades later the event of that day still stuck out in his thoughts.
