Crew of Lancaster KB745

KB745 was on an operation against the U-boat pens at Bergen Norway, after take off at 0605 on the night of October 4th 1944 there was nothing was heard of the aircraft.
The next day a shepherd by the name of Basil Oliver came upon the wreckage on a hillside at Gold's Cleugh, near Rothbury in Scotland. Which is North and slightly to the West of their base.
From the evidence found at the crash site it appears the crash occurred on the return trip.
The full reason for the crew's loss was not determined. The area around Rothbury is hilly and the name of the exact crash site is Gold's Cleugh, in Scotland a Cleugh is a gorge or ravine with steep rocky slopes.
The distance from Middleton St. George to Rothbury is about 118 km., it is not clear if this area was part of the return path from the attack on Bremen Norway. The skies over Middleton St. George were recorded as low cloud with rain squalls.
The Operations Record Book mentions the crash as being at Berwick, there is a Berwick Upton the Tweed on the Scottish- English border but this nearer Edinburgh some distance from Durham. Will have to follow up on that, and add in the information when it comes.
