Crew of Lancaster KB701

Lancaster KB701 squadron ID VR-B was lost during a training exercise.
After completion of the first part of night long exercise, the Navigation section, the aircraft headed for a small bomb range on the moors.

The aircraft crashed at Potterhouse Farm, Helmsley Moor near Wombleton 15 miles from Sowerby.
All crew members were killed in the crash. There were weather conditions forcing a low ceiling of 200 to 300 feet.

The investigation showed that the aircraft came down in a shallow dive and contacted the ground.
The report mentions that it most likely occurred as the aircraft was flying below safety height prescribed in the exercise briefing.
