Halifax JD210 VR-S also known as "Happy Valley Sally". "Happy Valley" a nick name given to the
the Rhine and Ruhr Valley a very heavily defended industrial section of Germany.
Quaile flew her a total of seventeen of the twenty-three operations JD210 was part of.
The crew photo may be that of F/O Quaile and crew, as they were the ones most closely associated with this Halifax.
P/O Francis Allan RAAF flew one operation with Happy Valley Sally. But engine failure caused the crew to return early on this operation.
The Moose Squadron's other loss on this night was Halifax JD410 flow by P/O Francis Allan and his crew. There was only one survivor of the Allan crew.
It was the second operation for the Studer crew. They had arrived at 419 on August 26th from No. 1664 HCU. It was the first operation with JD210.
F/O Studer and his crew were part of a six hundred plus bomber stream targeting both Mannhiem as well as nearby Ludwigshaven. The bomber stream came in from the West then turned back over Mannhiem and then contiued on to Ludwigshaven just across the river.
During the raid forty-four bombers were lost, two Halifax of 419 Squadron were amung the thirteen Halifax aircraft brought down that night.
The Studer crew crashed at Hattenheim located on the North bank of the Rhine 14km. West South West of Wiesbaden. There were no survivors
F/S Hayes is mis-named Mayes in some sources.

The Next VR-S
Sepember 16/17 F/O Quaile and his crew were assigned to serial number LW240, the new VR-S. It was to be a short relationship. While home bound from Modane they were attacked by a night fighter bringing VR-S down. All the crew survived.Loss of Halifax LW240
